Timmins – The business community came out in full-force to celebrate the best in local business. Sixteen local businesses and entrepreneurs were honoured at the 2010 Nova Business Excellence Awards on Thursday May 7. Tickets for this year’s event sold out in record time. Over 450 members of the business community filled the McIntyre Arena, making this awards ceremony the most well-attended in the event’s eight-year history.

TIMMINS, ON: As Timmins celebrates four years of centennials, early prospectors that claimed stake in the future of the City with the Heart of Gold are being recognized for their contributions to the Canadian mining industry and will be inducted to the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame.

Benny Hollinger, Sandy McIntyre and Jack Wilson will be honoured at the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame’s 22nd annual induction ceremony, to be held Thursday, January 14, 2010, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Toronto.

Sergeant Alan Richardson, Chair of the Timmins Olympic Torch Relay Community Celebration Committee announced today that a Timmins Community Olympic Youth Torch Relay will take place on December 9, 2009.

The event is being staged in advance of the Vancouver Olympic Torch Relay and Community Celebration scheduled to take place on Jan 1, 2010 at the Hollinger Park in Timmins.

According to Richardson, “a Youth Torch Relay involving 100 students from our community is a great way to engage the student population of Timmins in advance of the real relay. The activity should build and increase “top of mind” regarding the January 1 festivities and hopefully motivate the student population to come out and cheer the local runners.

Timmins' own Mark Torchia of The Torchia Group received the honour of being named Entrepreneur of the Year at the 23rd Annual Northern Ontario Business Awards (NOBA) held on October 8th in Sault Ste. Marie.

In partnership with the Ontario Fire College and in support of Ontario Fire Prevention Week, the Timmins Fire Department invited the four local school boards to consider participating in a Timmins - Junior Fire Chief for a Day contest promotion directed at children ages 7 to 12 through the community schools and their respective outreach programs. The aim of the promotion was to teach children at an early age the basics of fire prevention and to remind them of the devastating consequences associated with poor fire prevention planning.

TIMMINS, ON: When the Olympic Flame arrives in Timmins in just 92 days time, and on the 64th day of the cross Canada Olympic Relay, it will be proudly carried by a Torch Bearer nominated by the Timmins Olympic Community Celebration Committee as our community torchbearer to light the celebration cauldron for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay.

The Timmins Leg of the Olympic Flame Torch Relay will begin in Porcupine, Ontario. Carried by runners selected by our relay partners; Coca-Cola and RBC, the Olympic Torch will wind its way westbound through our community to our Olympic Flame Celebration at the Hollinger Park.

Positively Timmins, a community pride campaign for the City of Timmins, has released Positively Timmins - J'en Suis Fier buttons.

“We developed these pins to bring awareness to the campaign and it’s goals”, says Esko Vainio, Chair of Positively Timmins - J'en Suis Fier Steering Committee. “Our long-term goal is to have community leaders and all of our city’s front-line service workers sport these buttons”.
